If you are not much of a chef, there are several restaurants within a 3 mile radius that are open for dinner 7 days a week. We encourage our guests to take a sunset cruise around the property, stargaze around the fire at night, mix a cocktail, and hopefully meet a few new friends along the way. There's no shortage of impressive views in Terlingua. The West Texas town neighbors Big Bend National Park and is surrounded by the majestic Chisos Mountain Range. Keeping the focus on the pristine landscapes, Willow House provides a remote refuge to unwind in the Lone Star State.

This is a local watering hole with a variety of food and drinks on the menu. High Sierra is open during the day (noon - 2am), so it becomes a great option for lunch when most options in the ghost town are closed. Inside Lajitas Resort, behind the resort's manufactured mini western town (reminiscent of Disneyland), is a cool bar called The Thirsty Goat Saloon. The bar received its namesake from Lajitas’ duly elected mayor, Clay Henry, who is also a goat. Clay Henry was famous for his thirst for Lone Star Beer.

A view of the Willow House façade during the daytime. Stop by 4pm - 9pm Wednesday - Monday, or give them a call to order for takeout. In 1914, St. Agnes Church, also known as Chisos Mission, was established and became a focal point of the Terlingua mining town. Church records indicate the priests adopted the  Terlingua Cemetery.

As trendy as El Cosmico has become, the magic hasn’t exited the quirky ‘campground’. Live music at the mini stage 3-4 nights a week and a truly awesome gift shop makes El Cosmico unlike anywhere I have visited previously. From construction (which was no small feat in such a remote location) to greeting the property’s first guests, Werner had her hands in every part of the project.

If you’re looking for relaxation, privacy, and a chance to truly enjoy the beauty of the desert, the Guest House has just what you seek. Stretch out in a hammock or watch the stars from an outdoor bed. Warm up by the handcrafted fireplace, or soak in the tub while taking in the desert landscapes. The Guest House is the perfect size for individuals or couples, and provides a lovely, secluded retreat.

Werner also stresses the importance of artwork that reflects the region. The California native came to Texas five years ago by way of Dallas’s Southern Methodist University and quickly became inspired by the magic of Big Bend National Park. She fell in love and immediately began looking for land on which to build. “Terlingua is the closest access point to the national park, but there wasn’t anywhere cool to stay that took the landscape into account,” she recalls.

The Guest House is $225 a night plus tax, with a 2 night minimum stay (3 night minimum during the busy season). There’s typically a 2 person maximum (call for special requests). A damage deposit of $100 is required on arrival.

Not only is it the ideal conversation circle, but its design puts nothing between the dining table and the desert scenery framed by oversized windows. In a landscape filled with equal parts beauty and mystery, Werner has created more than a hotel—she has built a haven for the creative-minded traveller. Willow House No. 2 offers guests one king bed, a separate living room with additional daybed, luxe bathroom, and large enclosed outdoor patio with built-in daybed that serves as additional secluded living space.

Willow House is the perfect combination of remoteness and accessibility, community and privacy, sophisticated interiors and comfort. The proximity to the park makes Willow House desirable beyond its design. Guests are close enough to  Big Bend National Park (6 miles to the entrance) to hike South Rim for the day and be back on property for a sunset dinner.

During the initial building stages, it was truly her respect for the land which drove all construction and design decisions. She chose natural concrete as “light-colored buildings pop to the eye,” in an effort to preserve the view for her neighbors. She also “re-homed” the ocotillo and rocks moved during construction. Willow House sits on just under 300 acres of raw land.

Your options Monday- Wednesday will be limited so I recommend first time visitors plan their Marfa travels between Thursday- Saturday. There is not a spot on the property where Werner’s love for the desert can’t be felt. Though not a designer or architect, founder and first-time hotelier Lauren Werner is the mastermind behind every detail at Willow House.
